BHARATPUR: Keoladeo National Park in Rajasthan, India is a renowned bird sanctuary . It was previously known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. There are thousands of rare and extinct species of birds , such as storks came from Siberia, who come here in winter . Here some 230 species make their home in the National Park of India. Now it has become a major tourist destination and here in the winters ornithologist come in abundance. In 1971 it was declared a protected bird sanctuary and later in 1985 it has also been declared a 'World Heritage '.

The Bird Sanctuary was built 250 years ago, and the name Keoladeo (Shiva) temple was given after the temple located in the sanctuary. Due to the natural low lying area here, this area had to face frequent flooding. Bharatpur ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal (1726 to 1763), built a dam at the confluence of two rivers Gambhir and Banganga .

The National Park was a favorite hunting ground of the Maharajas of Bharatpur, a tradition before 1850. Here in honor of the British Viceroy hunting of birds annually was organized. In 1938, in just one days hunt nearly 4273 birds were killed. Mostly Melord and teal birds were killed. General linlithgo who was at that time Governor of India, killed them with his colleague Victor Hope.
